Harvest time – Jam time
Why not make your own jam by collecting wild blackberries or elderberries? Late summer, early autumn is the most beautiful time in the year to go out for long walks.
Last weekend I decided to get out my old colander and took it with me on a walking tour through the fields. I picked wild blackberries and elderberries and took them home with me to make a delicious jam.

Sterilise your Glass containers
Tip! You can clean your glass containers by firstly giving them a wash and secondly putting them into the oven on a clean baking tray. Don´t forget the lids. Put everything in the oven for 10 minutes. Set the temperature at 180 degrees Celsius. Another option is to put clean lids and glass containers in a pot and boil them for 10 minutes in water. Let them cool off on a clean towel.
Wash the berries and put them into a pot. Heat it up and stir until the juice comes out. Strain the berries into a bowl by using a spoon. Press the fruit with the spoon against the colander and do this for about 10 minutes. (See picture) This is the most important step because you will be able to get all the essence from the fruit into your jam. You will know when it´s ready: What should be left over in the colander is a dry mash of little seeds and the peel.
Clean your pot and pour the strained berry juice back into the pot. Now add the sugar and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. Keep stirring…we don´t want any burnt offerings 😉
Now you can fill your glass containers with jam. Use a towel or oven gloves to protect your hands from the heat. After you have filled every jam glass, put the lid on and turn the jar upside down. When the lid pops, you can turn it over again and let it cool off.
Put a nice label on the glass and enjoy you wild berries jam!
